Nachtblumen Podcast #20 Morssink

The 20th episode of the Nachtblumen Podcast comes as a celebration of the 4th birthday of the platform which was earlier this month. Four incredible years full of a lot of joy, creative challenges, fulfilled dreams, big lessons and growth. In this time, I constantly developed the concept of the platform, while always maintaining my beliefs, values and ideas at the core. It is a great pleasure to see how things are unfolding, and the amazing people that I get to work with on this journey. In the next year of Nachtblumen, you can expect new features, fresh points of view and as always a lot of incredible music. I couldn’t be happier to be able to invite an artist that I admire a lot and believe is the perfect fit for this milestone in Nachti’s sonic story.

Olivier Morssinkhof also known as Morssink is an up and coming Dutch DJ born and based in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Music has always been a big part of Oliver’s life. Having played the piano for 10 years and electric guitar later on for a couple more, he really established a strong connection and interest towards this world. The first genres that made a significant impact on him were rock and dubstep.

Having gone through the entire spectrum of genres gradually while growing up, Olivier was introduced to electronic music a few years ago, which happened to be his final destination. Following the same path of systematic progression, he started going to many and different events experiencing and getting acquainted with the scene and the culture. His first electronic encounters were with Recondite and Afterlife.

Morssink was born the moment that Olivier got in touch with techno. From the first moment that he experienced this music, he realized that this is something special. His curiosity and strong drive led him to buying his first controller and starting to practice with all the music that he was passionately collecting already.

As the local techno scene in Tilburg isn’t so developed or big, Olivier was challenged to do a lot of discoveries on his own outside of a club environment. Understanding how a good set is built was one of those things. Tommy Four Seven has been one of his early inspirations, when it came to building a coherent techno experience. Followed by more experimental and breakbeat influences, Morssink really dove headfirst into listening and understand the full palette of electronic music.

Nowadays, it is the hypnotic sound that mostly characterizes Morssink’s sets. Heavily influenced by Pole Group, he has managed to find that sweet spot between raw, straightforward and hypnotic sounds. His output is always incredibly consistent, and when you listen to a Morssink set you feel like you are in a proper club environment. What I find impressive is the fact that he is able to create such a solid vibe and club experience, without having had the chance to actually attend many of those before the pandemic. Being able to be so inspired and understand techno so well without those external influences from the dancefloor speaks a lot about character and his connection to music.

A few years ago, Morssink was hired to work for the Draaimolen festival in Tilburg, which is an institution when it comes to presenting good quality techno acts, together with some experimental performances in that area of the Netherlands. Through his work there, he learned a lot about the scene first hand, and had the chance to establish some valuable connections with other likeminded passionate members of the electronic music community like Jerry and Nigel from Embodiment. From that moment on, he gained clarity on the sound that he is looking for, his possible artistic future and became part of the RT community in Rotterdam, where he was appreciated and supported to pursue his goals in music.

In addition to his techno alias, Olivier has one more project, which focuses on his love for house music. Two years ago, he started publishing his Groove Session mixes under his alter ego Insert House Alias. This is yet another project that emphasizes on his solid mixing skills together with an always impeccable selection of house and dub music.

Currently, Morssink is focusing on upgrading his setup and finding some opportunities to play in front of a bigger crowd. Having played some local raves and smaller parties around Tilburg, he is definitely ready for the next steps, that will allow him to present his sound to a bigger and hopefully more critical audience. His relentless thirst for new music will probably lead him to experimenting time and time again with his sound and aliases, but one thing is for sure – the sound of Morssink as of today is there to stay.

In his mix for Nachtblumen, he really wanted to deliver a consistent story that demonstrates his skills, versatile taste and love for the hypnotic sound. His appreciation towards my platform motivated him to bring his best techno set to date incorporating a lot of Nordic sounds and inspirations from this year’s Draaimolen experience. I am proud and happy to be celebrating Nachti’s 4th birthday in such great company! Press play and enjoy this intense journey that puts the beginning of a new season, which will hopefully be full of a lot more dancefloor experiences and great music worldwide.
